Newsletter 20 June 2018

Hi everyone,
It has been a bit gloomy and grey lately – nice to see the sun over the past couple of days. Long may that last. We’ve got some great things happening in the next week or so.

Living the Change film night: Thursday 28 June, Heathcote Community Centre, Bridle Path Road, 7.15 for a 7.30 screening.

Living the Change explores solutions to the global crises we face today – solutions any one of us can be part of – through the inspiring stories of people pioneering change in their own lives and in their communities in order to live in a sustainable and regenerative way. A thought provoking 90 minute documentary, brought to you by Sustainable Bays, Heathcote Community Association and LIFT library.

Light refreshments will be provided by Bridge2Rocks TimeBank. Please bring a cash donation to help cover costs, plus cushions / beanbags / friends / neighbours.

No young children please.

Sustainable Bays is a project proudly supported by Sumner Bays Union Trust as umbrella organisation. We are grateful for funding from the Christchurch City Council’s Innovation & Sustainability Fund, which enabled us to contract Robin Arnold as Sustainability Coordinator. We are looking forward to contracting Niki Jones as the Sustainability Coordinator focusing on community gardening and food forests.

Mini Music
After some ups and downs lately, I am excited to announce that Siu Williams-Lemi will be taking over as tutor from next Tuesday 26 June. Siu is very experienced taking preschool music and movement programmes, and runs Loopy Tunes in various places around the city. Siu comes highly recommended (by Cathy White and others) and Sumner families really enjoyed it when she relieved for us on Tuesday 12 June. Our sessions run in the Matuku Takotako: Sumner Centre on Tuesdays, upstairs in Puoro-raki (Wakefield Ave end of building) and at the Uniting Church hall on Augusta Street in Redcliffs on Thursdays. Both sessions run at 9.30 am and cost $3 per child or $5 per family (more than one child).
If you have any spare cushions lying around at home which are in a reasonable condition, please let me know. We would like some cushions for the children to sit on at Mini Music in Sumner.

Sumner Silver Band
A big thank you to Gavin Bain and Peter Thorby who have recently donated funds to the Sumner Silver Band.

Tea & Talk
From 1 July, the Tea & Talk group will be moving upstairs to the big table next to the kitchen in the Matuku Takotako: Sumner Centre. This floor is accessible to those with mobility issues by the lift in the foyer. It runs from 10.30 – 11.30 am each Monday except public holidays.

Congratulations to Sumner Bays Union Trust Board member Lydia MacKinnon who will be receiving a Community Board Community Service Award next week for all her service to the Trust and to our coffee mornings. Also receiving an award there is Jan McLauchlan, who has given the Redcliffs Village Library amazing service over the last several years. Congratulations Jan!

Seniors Movie Afternoon: Tea with the Dames, 5 July, 1.30 pm, Hollywood Cinemas. $10 per ticket. Please contact Maree to book on 376-4020. Please get your tickets a day earlier if possible to avoid waiting in a queue in the foyer.

Warm regards,
Eddie Hayes
