** Sumner Bays Union Trust Newsletter 15 February 2013
————————————————————

Hello everyone,
I hope you are enjoying the lovely weather. Our projects have kicked off for what looks likely to be a busy year again.

Welcome aboard Beth Cohen who is running Mini Music for us this year. Beth brings a wide range of musical talents to Mini Music’s Sumner (Tuesdays 9.30 am, old school hall kitchen, Wiggin Street) and Redcliffs (Thursdays, 9.30 am, Union Church, Augusta Street) sessions. We look forward to welcoming Cathy White’s baby #4 in the next couple of months. Beth and I will be working on developing another project – a music programme for seniors. Watch this space!

Rockers of Ages Choir has relocated to the Redcliffs Community Shed at 99c Main Road and is practising each Wednesday during school terms from 10.30 am – 12.30 pm. Thanks to Nikki and Gary from the Muse.

The Redcliffs Community Shed is in the final stages of preparation before being officially open. Reg and the team have concrete going down in the mechanical workshop next week. You are very welcome to visit and take a look at the place. It’s looking pretty good! Congratulations to Reg on his recent 90^th birthday.
Have you seen the OK Corral on the Redcliffs New World site? This was the brainchild of Reg Dalley and he and Dave Kennedy were very busy building plywood skateboard ramps just before Christmas for children to use. The site requires adult supervision at all times, so see Reg if you’re interested in helping out. regenadal@snap.net.nz (mailto:regenadal@snap.net.nz) or 384-3830.

The Local Food Project with the Sumner-van Asch Community Garden are busy over the summer growing season. SumnerFoodSwap happens once a month at the Sumner Van Asch Community Garden and you’re invited. It’s on Tuesday February 19th 6.30 – 8pm (then 3rd Tuesday every month). Bring to swap any extra produce, seeds, or seedlings (or anything else!) There will be a pot luck and BBQ happening so bring some food to share. This coincides with the community garden’s evening session. Regular Tuesday morning sessions are held in the garden from 9.30 am. Contact Bailey on pbperyman@gmail.com (mailto:pbperyman@gmail.com) to find out more.
Redcliffs Community Garden is being looked after by Warren and family. If you’d like to get involved, contact Warren on wps20@yahoo.com (mailto:wps20@yahoo.com) . Everyone is welcome!

Sumner Tea & Talk and Redcliffs Coffee & Conversation have kicked off for the year. Thank you so much to all the volunteers who assist. Tea & Talk is held every Monday morning from 10.30 – 11.30 am at the old Sumner School hall kitchen on Wiggins Street and Coffee & Conversation is held every Thursday morning 10.30 am – 12 pm at the Redcliffs Union Church on Augusta Street. Great company and conversation, and, of course, great tea and coffee.

Age Concern Accredited Visitor Programme
I’m increasingly aware of the number of lonely elderly people in our community. Sumner Bays Union Trust will be working in partnership with Age Concern Canterbury to increase the number of accredited visitors working in our community. It’s a commitment of a minimum of one hour per week, with Age Concern staff willing to come out and run training sessions in our local area. Please let me know if you’re keen. There are currently 2 – 3 accredited visitors in our area and we need many more. Once we have enough people, an initial interview/orientation session will be held. Thanks to Liz, Rebekah and Nicki from Age Concern Canterbury for coming out to visit this week.

Redcliffs Craft Group is up and running again at 1 Bayview Road, every Thursday afternoon from 1 – 3 pm. Anyone is welcome.
As of the end of March 2013, the Redcliffs Information Centre will pass out from under the auspices of Sumner Bays Union Trust to the Redcliffs Residents Association.

** Some dates for your diary
————————————————————

Senior Expo – Probably Friday 8 November – to be confirmed.
Community Carols – Thursday 12 December. Venue to be confirmed.

** Community Notices
————————————————————

If you have any notices you would like me to put in this newsletter please let me know. It goes out semi-regularly – and I can be persuaded to put it out more often if I have enough material.

The Create’n’Connect Art group runs at St Andrew’s Anglican Church hall on Thursday mornings 9.30 am – 12 pm. Thanks to Beth Moore for asking for me to put this in my newsletter. It’s good to see what else is going on around our local community.

Redcliffs Public Library: (Wearing my other hat as treasurer of Redcliffs Public Library Inc.) Did you realise that Redcliffs has its own public library? It is run by dedicated volunteers who keep it well stocked with the latest fiction and we have a great children’s section too. It’s open to anyone, not just Redcliffs people, so if you’re looking for a library that is a bit closer to home, you would be very welcome to join us. We’ll be closed for approximately a month starting soon while the Redcliffs Tennis Club’s courts are repaired, but we’ll have an interim measure in place for that time – possibly a range of the latest fiction available an afternoon a week at a yet to be confirmed location. The usual site is the Redcliffs Tennis Club at 75 Main Road, 10 am – 4 pm, Monday – Friday and Saturday mornings. You may have also seen our book stall at the Mt Pleasant Farmers Market. We have a major rebuild project in fundraising mode at present – if you would like to donate to
the rebuild fund, we welcome you to do so.
Finally, anyone who has visited me recently will know that I share my office at the Redcliffs Community Shed with Monty. Monty is a 13 week old Chihuahua puppy and he loves people. Just a heads up in case you are surprised to meet him. He’s great with kids.

Warm regards,
Eddie Hayes

Hi everyone,

Today marks an end of an era for Sumner Bays Union Trust. For four years, office has been located in the vestry of the Redcliffs Union Church on Augusta Street. Today we moved from there to the main office at the Redcliffs Community Shed at 99c Main Road. I have immense gratitude to the Union Parish for hosting me for the last four years. I’ve come through some of the most turbulent times in Christchurch history in that room – literally as well as figuratively. Thank you.

To find the new office, your best bet is to park on Augusta Street and cross Main Road at the zebra crossing. Walk up the long driveway beside the hairdressers and Redcliffs Community Shed is the building at the very rear of the property. Our phone number and email address will remain the same. A big thanks to Dave Kennedy and Peter Eggeling for moving me in… I couldn’t have done it without you.

For the last 22 or so months I’ve shared premises with the Beryl McCombs Kidsfirst Kindergarten at Redcliffs. Liz, Gary and Fiona are fantastic teachers and I’d like to thank them for being so willing to share the premises with me and with the various groups running under the auspices of Sumner Bays Union Trust.

Finally some start dates for 2013:

Mini Music resumes at Sumner on Tuesday 22 January at the old Sumner School hall kitchen. It resumes in the Redcliffs Union Church on Thursday 24 January. Both sessions are at 9.30 am. Beth Cohen is our new Mini Music tutor for 2013. Beth comes from New York and has a background teaching various instruments, including xylophone. We look forward to having Beth relieve while Cathy White is on maternity leave during 2013.

Sumner Tea & Talk resumes on Monday 21 January in the old Sumner School hall kitchen. Thank you to everyone who has helped during 2012.
Redcliffs Coffee & Conversation resumes on Thursday 17 January 2013 in the Redcliffs Union Church. Both Coffee & Conversation and the Redcliffs session of Mini Music will be moving temporarily while the repairs are carried out on the Redcliffs Union Church premises. I will let you know ahead of time when this is to be.

The SBUT office will close at 3 pm tomorrow, Thursday 20 December 2012 and will reopen on Monday 14 January 2013.

Have a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

** Sumner Bays Union Trust Newsletter 6 December 2012
————————————————————

Hello everyone,
Summer is here and yesterday proved it! I hope that everyone has recovered from the heat.

Sumner Redcliffs Community Carols is coming up on Thursday 13 December at Scarborough Park, weather permitting. Thanks to Paul Costley for organising the programme for the night. This year the event will feature the Sumner Silver Band conducted by Steve Griffin, the Sumner School Choir conducted by Robyn Lean, the Christchurch School of Music Primary Schools Outreach Concert Band (including students from Redcliffs, Beckenham and Opawa Schools) conducted by Maree Parr, and singer Eddie Simon. Thank you to Peter Croft for his assistance and to Langham Signs for their support. Redcliffs Public Library and the Christchurch Coastal Pathway group will run the barbecue starting at 6 pm. Thank you to SBS Ferrymead for loaning their BBQ trailer again this year. It will be a great night, with a not-entirely-unexpected special guest during the evening. The massed singing will begin from 6.45 pm.

Rockers of Ages Choir will be moving in the New Year to the Redcliffs Shed for their rehearsals at 99C Main Road, starting in term one. It has been great working with Nikki and Gary of The Muse over the last year to make this choir happen.

The Senior Expo was a fantastic success on Friday 9 November. Thanks to all the groups and visitors who made this morning what it was. We look forward to repeating the event next November.

The Redcliffs Community Shed is well on its way towards completion. Recently a mad hatter’s tea party was held with a visiting milliner. The Shed committee includes Reg Dalley (Chair and Shed Coordinator), Dave Kennedy, Pete Hoskins, Wendy Rendle, Maureen Gray and I. In the New Year the Sumner Bays Union Trust office will move to the Shed permanently.

The final sessions for Mini Music will be held on Thursday 13 December (Redcliffs) and Tuesday 18 December (Sumner) and will resume in the first week of term one next year. Following the final sessions, we will be celebrating with a Christmas morning tea. Mini Music Redcliffs will be located in the Redcliffs Union Church in term one with repairs likely to require us to move to the Redcliffs Public Library at the Tennis Club hall in term two. We will give families plenty of notice regarding the move. The Sumner session will continue at the old School Hall kitchen. Thank you to Cathy White who has facilitated our Mini Music sessions since they began in 2009. Cathy will be on maternity leave for 2013 and we are in the process of appointing a new tutor for 2013. We wish Cathy, Paul and their family all the best for 2013, and hope to see Cathy’s return in 2014 with baby #4.

The Local Food Project and the Sumner-van Asch Community Garden have flourished this year. Thank you so much to Bailey, Susan, Lucy, Liz and everyone else involved. Warren and family have been great looking after the Redcliffs Community Garden this year. If you would like to get involved in any of these initiatives, you are very welcome.

Sumner Tea & Talk will hold its final session for the year on Monday 17 December with a Christmas party. Thanks to all the volunteers who have supported this new initiative. We look forward to returning in mid-January. Redcliffs Coffee & Conversation will hold its final session on Thursday 20 December, also with a Christmas party. The first Coffee & Conversation for 2013 will be held on Thursday 17 January 2013.

Congratulations to Win Collins on her recent 90th birthday. The Redcliffs Craft Group has continued to be a great project under Win’s expert guidance. This operates on Thursday afternoons, 1 – 3 pm at 1 Bayview Road and will return in 2013.

Sumner Bays Union Trust held its 4^th annual general meeting on Wednesday 14 November 2012. Thank you to the board for their oversight, wisdom, and loyal support of the activities that run under the Trust’s auspices. Denny Richardson was re-elected as chair, Bruce Reilly as treasurer and Malcolm & Mary Moore, Peter Croft, Lydia MacKinnon and Vicki Hyde were re-elected as board members. Thank you to everyone who attended.

Sumner Bays Union Trust and the Redcliffs Residents Association are working together on a path forward for the Redcliffs Information Centre. Watch this space!
Have a fantastic holiday season and a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Hello everyone,

Spring feels like it is nearly here. Daffodils are starting to come
out, and people are beginning to talk about spring planting.

It’s been a busy couple of months so my last newsletter was quite a
while ago. There have been many things happening in that time.
I have recently updated my newsletter email list so my apologies if you
had already unsubscribed from this list.

Redcliffs Community Shed

The Redcliffs Community Shed’s repairs are well and truly heading
towards completion under the supervision of Reg Dalley, our shed
coordinator. An enthusiastic group of people are making great headway
and it looks like it will be able to open in the not too distant
future. The arts and crafts area is just about complete. Aside from
some liquefaction silt blocking the sewer, the building is looking
great. It was really good for the Shed to host the Canterbury Men’s
Shed Hub group meeting in mid-July. Reg is the first point of contact
for any materials going on or off the site as well as organising visits
to the shed. We held our first official steering committee meeting in
late July and Reg was elected chair of the group. He’s willing to field
any enquiries about the shed. A formal Memorandum of Understanding is
now in place between the Redcliffs Community Shed and Sumner Bays Union
Trust. All funding and fundraising must go through the Trust so please
make contact with me on (03) 376-4020 if you would like to assist.
Email Reg on [3]regenadal@snap.net.nz or phone 384-3830.

Rockers of Ages Choir

has been meeting in the Redcliffs Union Church on Augusta Street over
the winter. This choir is directed by Nikki Berry and Gary Easterbrook
of The Muse Community Music Trust, and based on what I have been able
to hear from my office, it sounds good. The combined Rockers of Ages
Choirs (Sumner, Aranui and St Albans) performed a ‘flash mob’ at the
Palms Mall in Shirley during the most recent school holidays, and
judging by the video on YouTube, it went really well.

The Local Food Project including Van Asch Community Garden has
continued to produce food during the winter season. I’ve visited the
community garden a couple of times and have been impressed with the
number of people involved and their commitment to the project. The
Local Food Project held a Local Food Resilience workshop last week.

The Redcliffs Craft Group continues to meet every Thursday afternoon at
1 Bayview Road. Tutor Win is very talented and there is a keen group of
women attending each time. Win won a community board community service
award during June – congratulations!

This year we have a group of five third year geography students from
the University of Canterbury undertaking some research on Redcliffs as
part of their Geog 309 course. Glen, Tom, Marcus, Reagan and Andreas
will be conducting a mini census of Redcliffs. Please do assist them
with this research – it will help us find out what has happened to the
local population since the earthquakes.

Sumner Tea & Talk

has started with a lovely bunch of volunteers supporting it. If you
know seniors who might enjoy a nice cup of tea or coffee and some
company on a Monday morning in Sumner, please let them know. It is held
at the Old School Hall on Wiggins Street, in the kitchen, from 10.30 –
11.30 am each Monday.

Redcliffs Coffee & Conversation

continues each Thursday morning, 10.30 am – 12 pm at the Redcliffs
Union Church on Augusta Street.

Mini Music

is as busy as ever in both Sumner (Tuesdays, 9.30 am, Old School Hall
kitchen, Wiggins Street) and Redcliffs (Redcliffs Union Church, 9.30
am, Thursdays). It’s a great opportunity for pre-schoolers and their
parents/caregivers to join in some singing and dancing led by tutor
Cathy White.

Sumner Bays Union Trust is assisting the Redcliffs Public Library Inc.
with their rebuild project in terms of allowing me to give them some
time. Please see the following community notice:

‘Help Volunteer Library Rebuild

The only community library still operating in eastern Christchurch
needs help to raise funds to rebuild its demolished Council-built
facility. Redcliffs Library has been operating since 1914, and the
volunteers have continued the service after the February quake in a
variety of temporary venues. The library can lease its original site
back from Council, but needs to raise $200,000 for a suitable
replacement building so it can celebrate its centenary.

Any offers of funds or assistance can be made to Eddie Hayes (03)
376-4020.’

A Sing Your Heart Out Concert featuring singer/songwriter June Burney
will held in Sumner on Sunday 9 September which also features the
Rockers of Ages Choir. This will be held from 2 – 3.30 pm in the Old
School Hall on Wiggins Street. You are warmly welcome to attend. This
is a free event.

Planning for the Sumner-Redcliffs Community Carols is underway already.
This event will be held in Scarborough Park (subject to weather and
gaining appropriate permissions) on Thursday 13 December 2012. This is
a call for volunteers. We need volunteers on the night to look after
various aspects of the event, including looking after the BBQ, pick up
and drop off of seats for the Sumner Silver Band, handing out and
collecting in songbooks, putting up posters around Sumner and
Redcliffs, setting up at the park prior to the event, picking up
rubbish afterwards, and generally being on hand to do things that come
up on the night. We had great support from the Anglican Parish last
year, including Paul Costley, Sam Knight, Liz & Hugh Conley and others.
If you are keen to help out, let me know.

Sumner-Redcliffs Senior Expo

will be held again during November. A date and location have not been
confirmed yet. If you are keen to volunteer to assist with coordinating
this event, please let me know. You would be very welcome. Thanks to
Brian Lloyd and the Sumner Bowling Club last year.

Thanks must also go to our funders, some of whom have confirmed
donations and grants towards the operations of Sumner Bays Union Trust
and its projects for the next twelve months. Thank you to Canterbury
Community Trust, the Christchurch City Council via the Hagley-Ferrymead
Community Board, United Way New Zealand, and Sumner Supervalue.

Warm regards,

Sumner Bays Union Trust Newsletter 22 May 2012

Hello everyone,

It’s a beautiful day today despite a frosty beginning.

Our usual programmes continue to operate and it is good to see how some
of our newer projects are gathering momentum. Repairs are close to
being completed on the Redcliffs Community Shed and we have a team of
around a dozen men working on the building, ably coordinated by Reg
Dalley. It’s great to see the number of guys who haven’t met each other
before working together. The garden along the driveway has had a good
clean out over the last few days. Any enquiries about the Shed, please
contact Reg on 384-3830 or email regenadal@snap.net.nz.

Mini Music continues to go well in Sumner and Redcliffs. The children
enjoy themselves, and parents and caregivers get to connect with one
another. Coffee & Conversation which meets immediately after Mini Music
Redcliffs on Thursday mornings attracts up to a dozen people some
weeks, with a group of people who reside at Edith Cavell Rest Home and
Hospital in Sumner being picked up and brought along. My thanks to
Lydia and Deborah for collecting the Cavell residents who like to come.

Shortly we will be starting a Sumner coffee group (not its final name),
starting on Monday 11 June, 10.30 – 11.30 am in the Sumner Old School
Hall kitchen at on Wiggins Street. A meeting of anyone who wishes to
volunteer at this group will be held there on Monday 28 May 2012 at
10.30 am.

Redcliffs Coffee & Conversation is held every Thursday in the Redcliffs
Union Church on Augusta Street from 10.30 a.m. until 12 noon. Mini
Music is held in Sumner at the old school hall’s kitchen on Wiggins
Street at 9.30 am Tuesdays of school terms and in Redcliffs in the
Union Church at 9.30 am on Thursdays.

The Redcliffs Craft Group is held at 1 Bayview Road, Moncks Bay every
Thursday from 1 – 3 pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and learn
various crafts from our very experienced and friendly tutor.

The Rockers of Ages Choir continues to meet each Wednesday from 10.30
a.m. – 12.30 p.m. at the Sumner Union Church on Nayland Street. It is
directed by The Muse’s Nikki Berry and Gary Easterbrook who are well
known and highly regarded musical directors. I would thoroughly
recommend you to join it if you enjoy singing. Sumner Silver Band
practises each Thursday evening in the Redcliffs Union Church from 7
p.m. If you’re a budding brass musician or simply want to come along to
listen you are warmly welcome to do so.

Great thanks to Bailey Peryman for coordinating the Van Asch Community
Garden over the summer and hopefully into the future. The garden has a
loyal group of gardeners, including Van Asch Deaf Education Centre
students who are involved. Contact Bailey if you’re keen to join in on
pbperyman@gmail.com or 326-6927/021 122 7638. We’re always keen for
more gardeners in Redcliffs too – contact Warren on 384-2866 or email
him on wps20@yahoo.com. The Redcliffs Community Garden is located
behind the Union Church on Augusta Street.

A plug for the Beryl McCombs Memorial Kidsfirst Kindergarten Redcliffs
– Liz, Gary & Fiona are a great team of teachers working with children
from the age of 3 until they go off to school. Numbers have been a bit
low since the quakes so if you have children in this age group,
consider coming to Redcliffs Kindergarten. Children of that age group
seem to learn so much while playing.

Computing @ Redcliffs has attracted several students over the last few
months. It will be returning to Redcliffs in three or four months’ time
when tutor Lydia MacKinnon is back. My thanks to Lydia for her
willingness and skills to teach this course.

Last but definitely not least, congratulations to Win Collins for her
soon to be awarded Community Board Community Service Award. Win has
volunteered in this community for many years and is truly worthy of
such an award. Well done Win!

Warm regards,
Eddie Hayes

Sumner Bays Union Trust Newsletter March 2012

Hi everyone,

It’s a beautiful day out there today. I hope you are getting a chance to
enjoy it.

Sumner Bays Union Trust’s projects continue as usual. There are one or two
events coming up to advertise.

_Computing @ Redcliffs_: Wednesdays, 10 am – 12 pm, Redcliffs Union Church,
Augusta Street.

Lydia MacKinnon is teaching this course. If you or someone you know is keen
to learn how to use a computer, let Lydia know by ringing her on 326-5601.
Lessons are by booking, $5 per session.

_Mini Music Sumner_ has returned to its old time of 9.30 am on Tuesdays of
term time, at the new venue of Sumner Old School Hall on Wiggins Street.
Please note that dogs must be tied up out on the street, not on the grounds.
_Mini Music Redcliffs_ continues on Thursday mornings at 9.30 am at the
Redcliffs Union Church.

_Coffee & Conversation Combined Morning Tea with Beryl McCombs Memorial
Kindergarten_: This is happening on Thursday 5 April, 10.30 am – 12 pm, in
the Redcliffs Union Church hall. It’s a lot of fun – the children show us
some of what they have been doing.

On the subject of _Redcliffs Kindergarten_, they are holding their _60^th
birthday celebration_ from 3.30 – 5 pm this Friday 30 March 2012. It will
double as a farewell to their old munted building. Anyone with any
connection to the Beryl McCombs Memorial Kidsfirst Kindergarten is warmly
welcome to attend.

_Sumner Bays Union Trust_ is proud to support the _Redcliffs Public Library
Inc_. and their (temporary) rebuild project by assisting the library
committee to find funds to bring a temporary building on site at 91 Main
Road. Board member _Vicki Hyde_ and I are working on this. In the meantime,
Reg Dalley and some volunteers are working on beautifying the library site
to make it like a village green.

The _Redcliffs Community Shed_ is rapidly being repaired by a team of local
residents with expertise including anything from painting to curtain-making.
An old vehicle which requires some panel work will be among the first
projects to start work on once the shed is fully operational.

Any news, ideas, thoughts and feedback are always welcome.

Warm regards,
Eddie Hayes

_Sumner Bays Union Trust Newsletter February 29 2012_

Hi everyone,

This year has got off to a good start with a lot of things happening in our
community, although summer seems to have barely appeared this year.

The _Redcliffs-on-Sea Community Hub_ AKA community shed is rapidly taking
shape under the experienced eye of Reg Dalley as foreman. We have been
discussing starting a youth mentoring programme as part of the core work of
the hub, so watch this space for developments.

The _Redcliffs-on-Sea Community Information Centre_ continues to support
people in this community. Congratulations to our information centre
coordinator _Fletcher Stanton _for receiving an earthquake award! Well done
to _Marnie Kent_ from Sumner too!

_Coffee & Conversation _is attracting a broader group of people these days.
This runs each Thursday from 10.30 am – 12 noon within the Redcliffs Union
Church. We chat, joke, drink good coffee and generally enjoy ourselves in a
very congenial atmosphere. Everyone is always welcome to join us.

The _Redcliffs Craft Group _is continuing to run each Thursday afternoon 1
– 3 pm at 1 Bayview Road. Everyone is welcome to join in. Contact: Win
384-2765 for further information.

_Mini Music Sumner _has returned to its old time of 9.30 am on school term
Tuesdays at its new location of the kitchen in the Old School Hall on
Wiggins Street. Many thanks to Baden Melhuish for welcoming us so warmly.

_Mini Music Redcliffs_ continues in the Redcliffs Union Church each
Thursday, 9.30 am.

All parents/caregivers with preschool aged children are welcome to bring
them along to either session. We sing and dance, use musical instruments,
and generally have a lot of fun. Afterwards we have morning tea which
provides time for parents/caregivers to catch up and children to play. It
costs $3 per child or $5 for a family (2 or more children). _Contact_: Cathy
on 326-7576 for further information.

The _Rockers of Ages_ choir continues to meet in the Sumner Union Church on
Wednesdays, 10.30 am – 12.30 pm, directed by The Muse Community Music
Trust’s Nikki Berry and Gary Easterbrook.

The_ Sumner Silver Band_ meets on Thursday evenings in the Redcliffs Union
Church. If you would like to listen to them practise, you are warmly welcome
to attend. It meets from 7 pm.

_Redcliffs Community Garden_ has fortnightly working bees in the garden
behind the Union Church. _Contact_: Warren [3]wps20@yahoo.com or Bailey on
[4]pbperyman@gmail.com
Links:
3. mailto:wps20@yahoo.com
4. mailto:pbperyman@gmail.com

_Van Asch Community Garden_ has regular working bees. _Contact_ Bailey for
information. Everyone is welcome subject to being willing to undergo a
police check as this is part of the arrangement with Van Asch Deaf Education
Centre. The garden has existing raised beds and a tunnel house.

The _Local Food Project _is coordinated by Bailey Peryman and broadly
encompasses the Van Asch and Redcliffs gardens and other local food
activities in the community.

_Computing @ Redcliffs_ is happening on Wednesday mornings. If you would
like to book in for a class with our tutor Lydia MacKinnon, please give her
a ring on 326-5601. You may bring your own laptop or use one of the laptops
that are available on site. It meets in the Redcliffs Union Church.

Today I would like to mention a few of the groups and organisations with
whom Sumner Bays Union Trust collaborates on projects.

In Redcliffs, we support the _Redcliffs Information Centre_ which was the
initiative of Vicki and Peter Hyde in the immediate aftermath of the
February 22 2011 earthquake. We work together in any way we can. A good
example was the Neighbourhood Week barbecue which ran on Saturday 5 November
2011, which attracted around 100 people to Redcliffs Park. _Ferrymead Lions_
were also instrumental in their support of this BBQ. The _Redcliffs-on-Sea
Community Hub_ which is in the process of being set up will include a _youth
mentoring scheme_ which we can work in partnership with _Fuse Youth Café_ in
Sumner. _Mini Music Redcliffs _was kindly given the use of musical
instruments and a parachute by a previous music and movement group that once
ran in Redcliffs. _Coffee & Conversation _is a partnership with the
Redcliffs Union Church and we are grateful that the Union Parish allows us
to use their land for the _Redcliffs Community Garden_.

In Sumner, we work in partnership with the _Muse Community Music Trust_ on
_Rockers of Ages_. The _Van Asch Community Garden_ is a partnership between
_Sumner Bays Union Trust_, the L_ocal Food Group,_ _Sumner Community
Group/Residents Association_ and _Van Asch Deaf Education Centre._ We share
some resources with the _Sumner Playgroup_ – thank you for leaving us your
milk and left over refreshments after your Monday session! _Sumner Redcliffs
Community Carols_ was largely organised by Paul Costley and a team from the
_Sumner Redcliffs Anglican Parish_ in partnership with the _Sumner Silver
Band_, _Sumner School_ choir and the _Christchurch School of Music’s_
primary school concert band. The _Christchurch City Council’s_ staff team in
the Hagley Ferrymead ward as well as the _Hagley Ferrymead Community Board_
are very supportive of our work out here. I look forward more closely with
the _Redcliffs Library _and the _Redcliffs Residents Association _this year.

The Trust is always open to new ideas and new ways of working in the
community. Let us know if there’s anything in particular you would like to
see happening.

Warm regards,

Eddie Hayes

_Sumner Silver Band_ has resumed practices in the Redcliffs Union Church on
Thursday evenings from 7 pm. They welcome new members as well as members of
the community who might like to listen. _Contact_: Peter Croft 384-9534

_Community Variety Concert: _We are considering putting on a concert of some
sort sometime over the next few months. The idea is that this would provide
an opportunity for the Rockers of Ages Choir to perform as well as some
other local acts. If you are interesting in helping with this project
(performing even), please let us know. It’s just an idea at present but from
ideas come action.

_Sumner Bays Union Trust _provides activities and services that focus on
meeting the needs of the whole communities of Sumner and Redcliffs. We
welcome everyone in the spirit of inclusiveness. It is a registered
charitable trust and our board members are Denny Richardson (Chair), Lydia
MacKinnon (Secretary), Bruce Reilly (Treasurer), Malcolm Moore, Mary Moore,
Vicki Hyde and Peter Croft. The Trust employs three staff members – myself,
Fletcher Stanton as Redcliffs Community Information Centre coordinator and
Bailey Peryman as Local Food Project Coordinator. We aim to have as broad a
representation of the community as possible on the trust board.

If you have any ideas for future projects that Sumner Bays Union Trust can
support, please let us know.

Sumner Bays Union Trust Christmas Newsletter 2011
Merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah and happy New Year everyone,
This year has been an extraordinary one for us. I have been impressed by the courage and resilience that people in Sumner and Redcliffs have shown. We have been shaken and we have lost people and places we loved. We have shown compassion to others while experiencing a level of stress that many of us will have never experienced before. Neighbourhoods and wider suburbs have rallied to support one another. Most of us have met neighbours we never knew before February 22. New friendships have formed and we have worked together.

On that note, I would like to thank a range of people for their contribution towards Sumner Bays Union Trust activities this year:

• Paul Bolger for hosting and developing our website as well as his great support with Sumner Mini Music.

• Paul Costley, Sam Knight, Mike Hawke and team who took the burden of the work at Community Carols from my shoulders, and Maree Parr and the Christchurch School of Music’s primary school Concert Band and Robyn Lean and the Sumner School Choir for performing at Community Carols.
• Diana Saxton, Shupayi Mpunga, Harry Roeloffs, and other Christchurch City Council staff for a variety of reasons.

30 November 2011

Hello everyone,
The end of the year is fast approaching and there are a number of upcoming
events to mention.
_Sumner-Redcliffs Community Carols _is taking place for the second year
running in Scarborough Park (weather permitting) on Thursday 8 December
2011. The community barbecue begins at 6 pm and the Sumner Silver Band will
play some light music from around 6.30 pm. The massed singing, with a visit
from a not-so-mysterious stranger, kicks off at 6.45 pm. The event features
the Sumner Silver Band, the Sumner School Choir and other acts, and should
be a very fun, family event. Everyone is very welcome to come and join us.
For Redcliffs folk who don’t have vehicles, there will be transport arranged
to take you down to Scarborough Park from the Redcliffs Community
Information Centre.

these types of projects.

finished school for the year, they are most welcome to join us for the
Christmas breakups.

McCombs Memorial Kidsfirst_ (Redcliffs)_Kindergarten_ for their Christmas
Party. By then we will have had three terms with the kindergarten on site.

fortnightly basis. _Bailey Peryman_ is coordinating these in partnership
with the regular gardeners. As the last one was held on November 26, the
next one will be held on December 10, 10 am – 12 pm. Contact Bailey on

Call for Volunteers

2. http://www.sumnerbays.org.nz

I’m looking for volunteers again. I know some of you must have a desire to
help out in the community, and in fact, many of you already do, which is
awesome.

1. Father Christmas for Sumner-Redcliffs Community Carols. Any keen blokes
who don’t mind children and lollies, let me know!
2. Helpers for Mini Music – I need some people to look after the morning tea
at Sumner. This could be a rostered position. Let me know! It’s Tuesdays of
school term times.
3. Any helpers for Coffee & Conversation – it would make my job a lot easier
if I had someone to assist each week with the cleanup afterwards.
4. Someone to pick up and drop off 30 wooden seats from the Sumner Union
Church hall on December 8 for the Sumner Silver Band to sit on at
Scarborough Park. You’ll need to have a vehicle with a towbar and access to
a trailer. I’m very happy to book and pay to hire one from BP Redcliffs.
5. A Father Christmas for Mini Music’s breakups in mid December.

Let me know as soon as you can. I’ll be beginning to harangue people shortly
– particularly Father Christmas-types… 🙂

Warm regards,
Eddie Hayes
