Projects Overview

Sumner Bays Union Trust operates and supports a range of projects around the communities of Sumner and Redcliffs as well as further afield through the Bridge2Rocks TimeBank (Taylors Mistake through to Heathcote Valley) and is part of the Eastern Information Hubs group and the Linwood College Community Partnership group.

Coffee & Conversation runs every Thursday morning at 10.30 am except for public holidays. Come and join our friendly group of locals at the Uniting Church hall, Augusta Street, Redcliffs.
Tea & Talk runs Mondays upstairs in the Matuku Takotako: Sumner Centre, corner of Nayland Street and Wakefield Avenue, Sumner. Access for people with mobility issues is via the lift.

Our Older Persons’ project features our Older Persons’ Worker Maree McGovern. She can be contacted on 027 327 4493 or via email on . Maree is a registered social worker.

The Redcliffs Community Garden is currently in hiatus.



The formal part of our Community Preparedness project is completed. It was a project that included three local community organisations, Civil Defence, Red Cross, and other key stakeholders. Robin Arnold was the shared community facilitator across the Taylors Mistake/Sumner, Redcliffs and Mt Pleasant areas. Three emergency response teams are running – Mt Pleasant, and Sumner.

Loopy Tunes
Our music & movement programme for preschool children runs during school term times. It costs $2 per child and all children between 0 and 5 years of age are welcome with a parent or caregiver. Siu Williams-Lemi is our tutor.

Sumner Silver Band
Meets every Thursday evening in the Redcliffs Bowling Club. It welcomes brass instrumentalists of all ages. It is conducted by Ray Blampied  & performs at a variety of events. Local people are welcome to attend  our rehearsals. Contact: Peter Croft (03) 384-9534 Website: 


Sumner-Redcliffs Community Carols is held on the second or third Thursday evening in December at an outdoor site in Sumner. Previous locations have included Scarborough Park (2010 and 2011), Sumner School (2012 and 2013) and the Village Green (2014 and 2015). It features performances by the Sumner Silver Band, and other local ensembles. In 2016 it was held in the grounds of the Sumner Surf Lifesaving Club, and featured Eddie Simon and Yulia Townsend with the Sumner Silver Band. In 2017 Kim Georgine was MC and a choir made up of locals, including some members of the Sumner Theatre Group and members of the Rockers of Ages Choir led the singing.

Our Sustainable Bays project is underway with Robin Arnold contracted to lead this project. Niki Jones will be contracted shortly to work with community gardening and food forest projects in the area.
